FRA becomes a signatory of the Sustainable Web Manifesto (update)

On 5th November 2025, FRA has become a signatory of the Sustainable Web Manifesto, committing to six principles that now guide how I build, advise and work.

Advocating, educating and acting for a responsible and efficient use of digital technologies has been part of FRA's focus since its foundation, both in terms of offering and communications.

I believe in the power of digital technologies to enable innovation and progress. But I am also aware of the negative and unnecessary impact those can have on people, society and natural ecosystems if not used wisely.

As the manifesto itself puts it:

"The planet is experiencing unprecedented climate change and the Internet is both part of the problem and the solution."

The six principles

Clean: The services I provide and the services I use will be powered by renewable energy.

Efficient: The products and services I provide will use the least amount of energy and material resources possible.

Open: The products and services I provide will be accessible, allow for the open exchange of information, and allow users to control their data.

Honest: The products and services I provide will not mislead or exploit users in their design or content.

Regenerative: The products and services I provide will support an economy that nourishes people and planet.

Resilient: The products and services I provide will function in the times and places where people need them most.

Putting it into practice: FRA's website carbon footprint

Website carbon footprint shifts over time, with hosting, code and content, so I track it on an ongoing basis.

Historical measurements of FRA’s website homepage on on the Website Carbon Calculator:

  • 0.20g CO2e on 18th June 2026, 61% less than global average, rated C.

  • 0.15g on 30th March 2026, 71% less than global average, rated C.

  • 0.13g on 3rd November 2025, 74% less than global average, rated B.
